The needle size (38,40,42, etc) refers to the thickness of the needle. The higher the number the finer the point of the needle. There are also differences between the alignment and size of the barbs and/or forks. We’ve conducted comprehensive trials to determine which needles we should stock.
Due to the fact that mohair, depending on the quality and age of the animal, can come in differing thicknesses, the rooting results can often vary even when the same needles are used. The softness/thickness of the vinyl can also heavily affect the result.
TIP: Rotate the needle until you find the "sweet spot" that picks up hair and then mark that position on the handle. If you allow the needle to rotate while you root, you'll stop picking up hair. I suggest you use a magnifying glass to find the fork on the end of the needle and keep it at the "7:00" (or pointing at your left shoulder if you're right handed) position as you root, inserting the needle perpendicular to the hair strands.
